Hair Transplant Surgery: Information and Treatment

Hair transplant surgery first became very popular as an alternative to baldness during the 1950's. The techniques in the past 5 decades have certainly improved and this is a very successful method of having a permanent head of hair. Hair replacement systems are available for both men and women, and although they can be expensive, many surgeons do offer affordable options. For example, you can pay for each visit or use a payment plan so that you pay for the surgical restoration over a period of months or years.

Steps involved in hair restoration surgery

The best person to start with when you decide that hair restoration is the treatment you want for your baldness is a dermatologist. You need to be sure there are no underlying medical conditions that are at the root of your problem. This person will also be able to inform you about what causes hair loss and all the different treatments that are available. When you visit the doctor to discuss surgical means of hair restoration, he/she will first examine your hair to find out whether or not you have enough hair follicles to be able to reproduce them to grow more. The treatment typically involves:

  • The doctor takes hair plugs from the back or sides of your head
  • These plugs are then placed on the bald areas where there is enough blood supply to help them heal properly
  • Grafts such as this will need to be repeated a few months later

Each hair replacement session takes a few hours. The doctor will give you a sedative before he/she starts the treatment and you may need some pain medication afterwards.

Hair loss restoration techniques work best with male or female pattern baldness. This means that the baldness is inherited from either side of the family. You can also have success with this treatment if you lose your hair through accident or injury, but if there are underlying medical conditions, a hair transplant may not be the best solution.
